2011 Barista Jam
February 5, 2011
This time, “Jam” couldn’t be a more appropriate name for this particular event, as we will be honored to have in attendance, Walter the Bus. If you haven’t met Walter, you are in for quite the treat. We are fortunate that the Walter Dome where Walter lives is just down the street, and he’s graciously volunteered to drive over and join in the festivities. There’s nothing like a 13 foot tall VW Bus that can accommodate 50 people partying on the upper deck to really make a party a party.
During the event we will have a latte art competition. All Arizona baristas are invited to attend, participate, and compete. We will have prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. For those wishing to compete, we ask for a modest $5 donation.
Contestants will be asked to make a 6 oz cappuccino and a 12 oz latte, to demonstrate their skill as a barista. The cappuccino can be made with only free-poured milk and espresso, while the latte can be decorated on the top, if desired (chocolate art, powder, etc. are all fair game). Each barista will have 5 minutes to make the 2 drinks, and contestants will be judged on a number of factors including creativity, quality of execution, cleanliness, and flair.
The top 4 competitors will then compete in 2 head-to-head playoff rounds, to determine first, second and third.
To provide a wider stage for folks to display their skill, we will stream the event live on uStream.tv, and have it on display in the shop. Check back for details for how to view the event live, if you can’t be at Echo the night of the event.
As part of our continuing effort to combine an educational component for the professional barista, we will be offering a tasting opportunity with the same single original coffee roasted 4 different ways. It’s rare that anyone ever gets to try the same bean roasted differently, and we wanted to cease this event to give people a chance to play “roastmaster” for a night, and decide which roast they think makes the bean shine the best.
